This photo is of the entry to the Guards Depot at Caterham.
Any recruit who passed through these gates will never forget the experience.
I in my ignorance went up to the sentry and asked him where I should go and before I could wonder why he never answered a heard a scream of “Come here you ****”, followed by “Runner” and this apparition shot out of the guardroom door and stepped off at a rapid rate, “Follow him and don’t lose him” by this time he was almost out of sight.
What a difference when I departed Caterham for the Guards Training Battalion at Pirbright.
